Sitting in front of your computer and entering search terms into search engines' search boxes is certainly one way (and probably the cheapest way) of checking your Web site's performance in the SERPs (search engine results pages). However, it is extremely time-consuming and it's easy to miss a ranking for a Web site, if it's not listed on the top pages.
Automated search engine ranking tools offer a much quicker way for you to review your Web site's performance on search engines. Typically the best of these tools require subscription fees.
If you choose to subscribe to a software provider such as a ranking checker, find out whether they protect your IP address before you begin using it. Many search engines do not like their results being checked by automated programs (as they are not after all, 'real' visitors).
